about me
I am a passionate music educator originally from Melbourne, Australia, and currently living in Lyon, France.
I was lucky enough to grow up with a holistic music education – I started classical piano age 8, dabbled in flute, spent my entire childhood and adolescence singing in choirs, and went on to study Composition and Theory of Music at the University of Melbourne.
Since finishing university, my passion has turned to songwriting and exploring the wild world of jazz. Music has always had something new and exciting to offer me at every stage of my life so far, and I wish to pass that same sense of curiosity and wonder on to my students.
My studio is open to all ages, abilities and musical interests – I meet you where you’re at and adapt the lesson to your needs. From the joy of teaching a child their very first song, to helping a retiree rekindle their long-lost love of piano, I find every new day at the studio is an opportunity to connect and inspire.
My native language is English, but I am equally comfortable teaching in French.
🎼 My teaching philosophy
I find students of all ages stay engaged and excited about music when…
…they feel ownership over their music. My teaching method ensures that students understand the building blocks of music and can use them to create their own chord progressions, melodies, lyrics and improvisations. The possibilities in composition make music theory come alive, because each new concept opens up a new door to creating your own music!
…music is a relaxing creative outlet, instead of another arena of their life where perfectionism is expected. Inspired by the work of the late Forrest Kinney, we play gentle improvisation games that invite students to take their first steps into improvising at the piano. Everyone of every age can improvise, and many students are shocked and delighted to find that they can improvise beautiful music from the very first lesson!
Practice time, progress and technical mastery flow naturally from these two principles, as students who are excited about their music rarely have to be cajoled, bribed or convinced to practice.
